Chikashi Toyoshima is a notable Japanese biophysicist born in 1954 in Akita Prefecture. He is renowned for his work in cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography, particularly concerning the P-type ATPase family, including the sodium-potassium pump and calcium pump. His pioneering images of an ion pump were featured on the cover of Nature. Educated at the University of Tokyo, he has held positions at Stanford and Cambridge and has been a professor at the University of Tokyo since 1994, where he also directs the Center for Bioinformatics.
