Choummaly Sayasone is a Laotian politician who served as the General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and President of Laos from 2006 to 2016. He was elected as the General Secretary on March 21, 2006, succeeding Khamtai Siphandone after the 8th Party Congress. Sayasone assumed the presidency on June 8, 2006, and was re-elected in March 2011. He did not seek re-election to the LPRP Central Committee at the 10th Congress in January 2016, indicating his retirement from key leadership positions.
