Christian J. Lambertsen was an American specialist in environmental and diving medicine, best known for developing rebreathers for the United States Navy frogmen during the early 1940s. His invention began as a breathing apparatus in 1940 and underwent several name changes, ultimately becoming known as SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) in 1952. He was instrumental in enhancing underwater warfare capabilities and is recognized by the US Navy as 'the father of the Frogmen'. Lambertsen filed patents for his designs in December 1940 and May 1944.
