Christian Trédaniel (1934-2011) was a French practitioner of manual therapy who is credited with inventing the practice of Etiopathy, which he described as "non-instrumental surgery." Trédaniel was a paratrooper in the French army who, after suffering a sciatic nerve injury in a parachuting accident, became interested in manual therapy. He studied chiropractic in the United States, but was unsatisfied with what he learned. In 1959, he began practicing chiropractic in Cherbourg, France, under the guise of being a physical therapist. He later founded the International Osteopathic Association (AOI) and became its president. However, the French medical establishment banned the teaching of osteopathy to non-physicians in 1960. Trédaniel then created the term "Etiopathy" and founded the European College of Osteopathy in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1963. However, it was later revealed that Trédaniel had borrowed the term and method from the American doctor Gorge Dutton, who had written a book on Etiopathy in 1899. Trédaniel's Etiopathy practice has not been scientifically validated and is not recognized by the French government. Despite this, Trédaniel's work has been influential in the field of manual therapy and he is considered a pioneer in the development of Etiopathy.
