He was educated at Charterhouse and Christ Church, Oxford, and trained for the priesthood at Westcott House, Cambridge, being ordained in 1983. Cunliffe's career included positions such as a Fellow at Lincoln College, Chaplain at the City University London, and various roles related to ordained ministry before becoming Archdeacon.
