He earned his A.B. in English from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Yale. An active participant in campus life, Dahl taught undergraduate courses and published scholarly articles, along with a book on author Louis Auchincloss. He represented Geneseo on various educational boards and announced his retirement as president in March 2013, effective June 30, 2014.
