Christopher Hugh Sykes was an English writer born on 17 November 1907 into the Sykes family of Sledmere, a landowning family from northern England. He was the second son of diplomat Sir Mark Sykes and his wife Edith Gorst. Christopher had a sister, Angela Sykes, who was a sculptor, and a politician uncle who shared the same name. His uncle was known to be a close friend of Edward VII for a period.
