She founded Janus Press in San Diego in 1955 and is renowned for her innovative techniques with dyed paper pulp in illustrations. Awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant in 1989, she has had a significant influence in the field of artist's books, showcasing her creativity and technical proficiency. Throughout her career, she has made substantial contributions to the world of art and printmaking. She was also active as a teacher in 1961.
