Clare Short is a British politician born on February 15, 1946. She served as the Secretary of State for International Development from 1997 to 2003. Starting her career as a civil servant, Short was a Labour Party member until 2006, representing Birmingham Ladywood in Parliament from 1983 to 2010. She became the first Secretary of State for International Development in the cabinet after the 1997 UK general election. Short resigned from the government over the Iraq War and later served as an independent until leaving Parliament in 2010.
