David Claude Toft was the Mayor of Galway from July 1981 until his death on December 3, 1981. Born on April 10, 1922, in Galway, he was involved in the amusement business with his family. Toft had been active in politics since the 1960s, supporting Bobby Molloy and winning a seat in the 1979 Galway Corporation elections. He humorously remarked on accepting the mayoral chain of office, citing family pride. Despite being ill, he fulfilled his duties until his death at age 59, and was buried in New Cemetery, Bohermore.
