Claudine van der Straten-Ponthoz was a Belgian-French mountaineer born on September 25, 1924, in Etterbeek. She was a skiing star and the daughter of Count Roger van der Straten Ponthoz. Tragically, she died on October 2, 1959, during a women-only expedition to climb Mount Cho Oyu, where an avalanche claimed her life alongside expedition leader Mme Claude Kogan and two Sherpa porters. Dorothea Gravina subsequently took charge of the expedition.
