Claus T. Helmig was a prominent German baseball player, manager, and official, born on January 2, 1936, in Frankfurt am Main. He made history as the first German to secure a professional contract with an American farm team and became the first European to play in a minor league game. Helmig was recognized as one of Germany's greatest baseball players, founding the Mannheim Amigos and serving as its department head for 20 years. He also held the presidency of the Mannheim Tornados for four years and was inducted into the German Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
