Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan is the archbishop of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch in the western United States. Born in 1955 in Kamishli, Syria, he completed his secondary education there before attending St. Efrem Theological Seminary in Lebanon, graduating in 1973. He became a monk in 1971 and was ordained as a priest in 1983. Kaplan has served in various roles, including as a teacher and head of the theological seminary at Mor Gabriel Monastery in Turkey. He was consecrated as a metropolitan and patriarchal vicar in 1991 and is an author and translator of many theological works.
