He began his professional career in 1917 and gained prominence with his comic strips in the 1930s, featuring characters inspired by his uncle and his dog, Napoleon. His work appeared in magazines like Life and Cosmopolitan, and he expanded into merchandise during the 1940s. After his death in 1951, his wife continued the strip with the help of his assistant, Roger Armstrong, for several years.
