Cloves Campbell Sr. was a pioneering American Democratic politician and newspaper operator, serving as the first African-American member of the Arizona Senate from 1966 to 1972. He previously held a position in the Arizona House of Representatives and was instrumental in promoting civil rights through his role as head of the NAACP in Phoenix. Together with his brother, he revitalized the Arizona Informant newspaper. Despite losing his eyesight due to diabetes, he continued his work until his death in 2004, leaving behind a legacy honored by schools and scholarships.
