Colm Tóibín (born May 30, 1955) is an Irish novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, journalist, critic, and poet. He currently serves as a professor of humanities at Columbia University and succeeded Martin Amis as a professor of creative writing at the University of Manchester. In 2017, he was appointed honorary dean at the University of Liverpool. Recognized as a 'champion of minorities' by Irish Arts Council director Mary Cloake, Tóibín received the Irish PEN Award in 2011.
