Colonel Stone Johnson was an African-American civil rights activist known for his involvement in the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama. Born in Lowndes County in 1918, he worked as a railway worker and union representative. Johnson founded the Civil Rights Guards, providing armed protection for homes and businesses involved in the movement. Notably, he helped carry a KKK bomb from Bethel Baptist Church and protected activists during the 1961 Freedom Rides. Johnson was married to Beatrice for nearly 70 years until her passing in 2011. He died on January 19, 2012.
