Constantine John Philip Ionides, known as Bobby Ionides, was a British herpetologist of Greek descent born in Brighton in 1901. He gained notoriety for his eccentric character and extensive study of reptiles, particularly in Southeast Africa where he permanently relocated. Ionides notably lost his hearing due to an encounter with an oncoming elephant and developed immunity to snake venom from multiple bites. He worked for the Tanganyika government as a park warden and published his memoir 'A Hunter's Story' in 1965. He died in Nairobi in 1968 after foot amputations.
