He studied decoration and applied arts at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts and later became a designer for ballet and theater. Moving to Laren in 1962, he flourished as a color pencil artist, especially recognized for his portrait of Queen Juliana in 1973. He often included subjects' family members and pets in his drawings, creating intimate family scenes. De Vries passed away in 2008 after suffering a stroke, shortly after participating in the TV program 'Sterren op het Doek.'
