Craig Cameron Mello is an American biologist and professor of molecular biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Born on October 18, 1960, in New Haven, Connecticut, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2006, sharing it with Andrew Fire for their discovery of the mechanism controlling gene expression through RNA interference (RNAi), based on research conducted at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Mello earned his bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Brown University in 1982 and completed his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1990.
