He played for the Collingwood and Richmond Football Clubs in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A former Preston player, he was noted for his goal-kicking and was awarded best and fairest in 1977. During his career, he played in 115 games and participated in the grand finals of 1980 and 1981. He is also the father of James Stewart, an Essendon Football Club player.
