He has served in significant educational roles, including as a Member of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions and Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University from 2000 to 2004. Additionally, he held acting Vice-Chancellor positions at Cochin University of Science and Technology and the University of Kerala. Thomas comes from a family of freedom fighters, being the son of R.V. Thomas, a former speaker of the Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly.
