Cyrus J. Colter was an influential American author born on January 8, 1910. A lawyer by training, he dedicated much of his career to public service before he began writing short stories at the age of 50. In the 1970s, he became part of the faculty at Northwestern University, making history as the first African American to hold an endowed chair there. His literary work primarily focused on the experiences of working and middle-class African Americans, enriching the representation of their lives in literature.
