D. A. Rajapaksa was a prominent Sri Lankan politician active since 1947, preceding Sri Lanka's independence. He began his political career in Hambantota and served as a Member of Parliament until 1965. He was a founding member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party established in 1951 and served as Minister of Agriculture and Land under Prime Minister Bandaranaike between 1959 and 1960. His sons, Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, later became Presidents of Sri Lanka in 2005 and 2019, respectively.
