Born on September 23, 1927, he established the first professional surf shop in Manhattan Beach, California, in 1950. Velzy hand-crafted surfboards from wood and synthetic materials and expanded his business to five retail shops and three production facilities by 1960, impacting the surfing industry significantly. He was affectionately nicknamed 'Hawk' due to his exceptional eyesight, which contributed to his craftsmanship.
