Dan Gavriliu was a pioneering Romanian surgeon born on April 26, 1915, in Brăila. He is best known for performing the first total surgical replacement of the human esophagus on April 20, 1951, which involved using parts of the stomach to replace damaged or deformed esophageal tissue. This groundbreaking procedure marked the first successful human organ replacement. Despite his significant contribution to medicine, Gavriliu did not extensively publish his research findings due to financial constraints regarding publication fees. He passed away on November 4, 2012.
