He is well-known for being appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority in September 2016. Alonto served in this significant role as the first Muslim chairperson until his passing in May 2019, contributing to the development initiatives in Mindanao, a region in the Philippines.
