David A. Karnofsky (March 28, 1914 – August 31, 1969) was an American oncologist known for his pioneering work in medical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He studied at Stanford University and developed an interest in clinical oncology during his military service in World War II, where he researched the effects of mustard gas. This led him to experiment with nitrogen mustards like mechlorethamine as chemotherapy agents for cancer. Karnofsky is also recognized for establishing the Karnofsky Index in 1948 to evaluate cancer treatment efficacy.
