David A. Winter (PhD, PEng) was a prominent professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo, known for his contributions to biomechanics. He was a founding member of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics and its first Career Award recipient. Winter received the Muybridge Medal from the International Society of Biomechanics and the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society. His military service included being an electrical officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. He is recognized for pioneering important methods in the study of human locomotion and balance.
