David Bronstein was a prominent Soviet chess player, writer, and theorist, born on February 19, 1924, and passing away on December 5, 2006. He became a chess grandmaster in 1950 at the age of 26, making him the youngest grandmaster at that time. Active between 1940 and 1970, he nearly became world champion in 1951 when he tied with Mikhail Botvinnik. Bronstein won the Soviet Chess Championship in 1948 and 1949. Widely regarded as a creative genius and tactical master, his book 'Zürich International Chess Tournament 1953' is considered one of the finest chess books ever published.
