A decorated World War II veteran, he commanded Strike Command, Aircraft Solomons in crucial battles on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Bougainville. O'Neill later rose to command Force Aviation in the Pacific and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Japan before retiring in July 1958. His distinguished service earned him several military awards.
