After leaving the band, he spent a decade collaborating with Herbie Mann and worked with notable musicians like Eddie Harris, B.B. King, Lee Morgan, and Cornell Dupree. Newman also released numerous albums of his own. He passed away on January 20, 2009, in Kingston, New York, due to pancreatic cancer.
