David Funchess was an American war veteran and convicted murderer, executed in Florida for the 1974 murders of Anna Waldrop and Clayton Keaton Ragan during a robbery. A Vietnam War veteran, he was diagnosed with severe PTSD in 1982. His execution in 1986 sparked controversy as he was the first veteran diagnosed with PTSD executed in the U.S. His legal team's failure to present PTSD as a mitigating factor during his 1975 trial prompted public outcry from veterans and anti-death penalty advocates, who argued it diminished his culpability.
