He studied at Harrow School and later at Oxford University, where he obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees followed by a Ph.D. He worked at the Bell Laboratories from 1954 until his retirement in 1992, contributing to semiconductor chemistry and the development of gallium phosphide light-emitting diodes. Notably, he received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize in 1969 for his research in semiconductor optics, including excitons.
