David Lodge is an English writer, novelist, playwright, and literary critic, born on January 28, 1935, in Brockley, South London. He was a professor of English literature at the University of Birmingham until 1987. Noted for his satirical novels on academic life, he is best known for his trilogy: 'Changing Places' (1975), 'Small World' (1984), and 'Nice Work' (1988), the latter shortlisted for the Booker Prize. His work also explores themes of Roman Catholicism, beginning with his debut novel, 'The Picturegoers' (1960). He has continued literary criticism since retirement.
