David Gail Meirhofer was an American serial killer active in rural Montana from 1967 to 1974, who confessed to four murders, including three children. He killed himself shortly after confessing and was never tried in court. His case was notable as the first to be investigated using criminal profiling techniques developed by the FBI during the early 1970s. Meirhofer's crimes contributed to the evolution of offender profiling, which became a modern method for identifying characteristics of unknown criminals.
