He primarily composes music for films and comes from a musical lineage; he is the son of film composer Alfred Newman, brother of Thomas Newman, and cousin to Randy Newman, all of whom are also musicians. David began playing the violin at an early age and studied at the University of Southern California, where he graduated as an orchestral conductor.
