David Reitze is an American laser physicist and a professor at the University of Florida. He served as the scientific spokesperson for the LIGO experiment from 2007 to 2011 and became the executive director of LIGO in August 2011, relocating to the California Institute of Technology. Reitze earned his bachelor's degree in 1983 from Northwestern University and his PhD in 1990 from the University of Texas at Austin. He is known for his expertise in ultrafast optics and laser spectroscopy, focusing on laser-interferometric detection of gravitational waves. He announced the first direct observation of gravitational waves in February 2016.
