He faced threats and pressure due to his activism, leading to a move to Franklin, NC, and later returning to Greensboro to care for his father. In 1980, he received the Levi Coffin Award for his leadership in human rights. Despite his achievements, he struggled with depression and alcoholism until his death on December 7, 1990, after which he was awarded a posthumous honorary doctorate.
