David Shapiro was an Israeli chemist, one of the early scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science. During World War II, he synthesized Atabrine, a malaria drug that saved thousands of lives. His research focused on the synthesis of sphingolipids, and he was regarded as the world's leading expert in the synthesis of biological lipids. In 1955, he received the Weizmann Prize from the Tel Aviv municipality for synthesizing sphingosine. In 1971, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his unique contributions to sphingolipid research.
