He was educated at Tonbridge School and later attended University College, Oxford, where he played first-class cricket for Oxford University from 1965 to 1967. Toft appeared in 27 first-class matches, scoring a total of 1,222 runs with an average of 27.77. His highest score was 145, achieved in a match against Cambridge University in 1967, which was also his final first-class appearance.
