He played primarily as a defensive back and was known for his role as a kick return specialist. Turner went undrafted after his time at East Texas State University, where he excelled in Track and Field, choosing to skip his senior football season. He joined the CFL as a free agent with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1989 before being traded to the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1990.
