David F. Welch, born on October 26, 1960, is an influential American businessman and research scientist recognized for his pioneering work in optical devices and optical transport systems for telecommunications. He developed commercially viable 980 nm laser pumps essential for low noise optical amplifiers in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. Welch also achieved significant milestones, including the first commercial optoelectronics integrated circuit, long before his competitors. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
