After a stroke in 1977, he shifted from advertising to writing, completing 23 novels, mainly centered around the character Mark Treasure. He also created a series featuring Chief Inspector Merlin Parry. Williams, a churchwarden and active in his community, was recognized for his contributions to literature, being shortlisted for prestigious crime writing awards and elected to the Detection Club. His ashes rest at St Mary, Thorpe, Surrey, reflecting his deep connection to the church.
