He performed with various bands throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including those led by Frankie Half Pint Jaxon and Dinah Washington. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and played in a military band. In the 1950s, he transitioned to a career as an advertising executive at the Chicago Defender, marking a significant shift away from his earlier music career.
