Del Martin was an American feminist and activist for lesbian rights, born on May 5, 1921, in San Francisco. She co-founded the Daughters of Bilitis, the first organization advocating for lesbian partnership, in 1955 alongside her partner Phyllis Lyon and others. Both women significantly influenced the legalization of same-sex marriage in the U.S. Martin married Lyon just minutes after the California Supreme Court ruling allowed same-sex marriage. She passed away on August 27, 2008, in San Francisco, two weeks after breaking her arm.
