Demetrio Chávez Peñaherrera, also known as Vaticano, is a Peruvian drug trafficker who controlled the production of coca paste in the Huallaga River valley from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. He was captured in Cali in early 1994 after fleeing the valley. In 1994, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for drug trafficking, public faith crimes, and forgery. Although he claimed to have paid Vladimiro Montesinos, he alleged torture during his imprisonment. He was released on January 13, 2016, after serving his sentence.
