Avey was recognized as a British Hero of the Holocaust in 2010. He also claimed to have swapped uniforms with a Jewish prisoner to enter Auschwitz, a claim that has faced scrutiny. His memoir, 'The Man who Broke into Auschwitz,' was released in 2011.
