He studied English poetry at Oxford University and was involved with the 'Oxford Poetry' magazine. After teaching in Singapore and Malaysia, he began teaching at Kyoto University in 1961, where he met and married Keiko Keene. He later developed an interest in Japanese novels and completed a doctoral thesis on Riichi Yokomitsu. Keene published research books, poetry collections, and translations, receiving the 1992 Noma Literary Translation Award.
