Derek Harold Richard Barton was a British chemist born on September 8, 1918. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1969 and received the prestigious Priestley Medal in 1995. Barton began his studies at Imperial College and the University of London in 1938, obtaining his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1942. He served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard University from 1949 to 1950 and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1954, later becoming a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1956.
